Refinish Your Own Furniture
Refinishing your own furniture can be a little messy but simple and a fun family project. Here are some quick tips to doing it Tip 1- Strip..Not sand any old finish with a store bought chemical paste stripper..Apply with an old brush evenly, let sit and scrape off with a plastic 4 inch putty knife ( plastic won't dig like a metal one ) Tip 2- Clean off the residue with acetone (use gloves and safety glasses) for a fast dry or mineral spirits for a safer normal cleaning Tip 3- Stain evenly with a rag..remember if you stain a piece and want it darker a 2nd and 3rd coat will not do it..multiple stainings will not darken the color, use the proper color one time Tip 4-wipe stain, let furniture dry and then use a spray can of polyurethane or other finish for a top coat..suggestion..spray multiple THIN COATS not a one time thick one. These are some basic techniques on refinishing your own furniture..Enjoy |
